ANOINTING
mashack - hebrew word for anointing.
chrisma - greek word for anointing.
EXCEPT FOR:
Genesis 31:13 where Jacob anointed the stone he had a dream on
Isaiah 21:5 where a sheild is anointed
Ezekiel 28:14 anointed covering cherub
ALL OTHER REFERENCES IS TO PRIESTLY THINGS AND TO KINGS.
Being anointed seems to mean being chosen by God for a specific reason to be a Priest or a King or both.
In the nation of Israel - a nation that was specifically chosen by God to be his name people out of all the nations of the earth - there were certain ones from this nation that were specifically chosen to be priests and kings . The anointing was the seal showing that these ones were given power by God for the purpose they were chosen.
So the reason for the anointing is carried into the time of Jesus Christ and on into the Christian era. Christ means anointed one.
He is the one who has been given:
Matt. 28
18 And Jesus approached and spoke to them, saying: “All authority has been given me in heaven and on the earth.
Acts 10:37,38
37 YOU know the subject that was talked about throughout the whole of Ju·de′a, starting from Gal′i·lee after the baptism that John preached, 38 namely, Jesus who was from Naz′a·reth, how God anointed him with holy spirit and power, and he went through the land doing good and healing all those oppressed by the Devil; because God was with him.
He was anointed to be a King and a Priest according to the manner of Melchizidek. Hebrews 5:5-10
2 Corinthians 1:
. 21 But he who guarantees that YOU and we belong to Christ and he who has anointed us is God. 22 He has also put his seal upon us and has given us the token of what is to come, that is, the spirit, in our hearts.
1John 2:
20 And YOU have an anointing from the holy one; all of YOU have knowledge. 21 I write YOU, not because YOU do not know the truth, but because YOU know it, and because no lie originates with the truth.
26 These things I write YOU about those who are trying to mislead YOU. 27 And as for YOU, the anointing that YOU received from him remains in YOU, and YOU do not need anyone to be teaching YOU; but, as the anointing from him is teaching YOU about all things, and is true and is no lie, and just as it has taught YOU, remain in union with him. 28 So now, little children, remain in union with him, that when he is made manifest we may have freeness of speech and not be shamed away from him at his presence. 29 If YOU know that he is righteous, YOU gain the knowledge that everyone who practices righteousness has been born from him.
As far as I can see there is no good scriptural reason to think that the word anointing has any other reason that to specify whom Jehovah God himself choses to be Kings and Priests in his upcoming Kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for.
Rev 5
. 9 And they sing a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, because you were slaughtered and with your blood you bought persons for God out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 10 and you made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth.”
These are the same ones that are spoken of in:
Daniel 7
27 “‘And the kingdom and the rulership and the grandeur of the kingdoms under all the heavens were given to the people who are the holy ones of the Supreme One. Their kingdom is an indefinitely lasting kingdom, and all the rulerships will serve and obey even them.’
These are the ones spoken of as being an administration that will be used by the Almighty to bring everything into subjection to his will.
Eph. 1
8 This he caused to abound toward us in all wisdom and good sense, 9 in that he made known to us the sacred secret of his will. It is according to his good pleasure which he purposed in himself 10 for an administration at the full limit of the appointed times, namely, to gather all things together again in the Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth."
This then is the purpose of the anointing.
Thank you for an enjoyable, scriptural article.
ReplyDeleteThe additional purpose of being the anointed priesthood, is to "declare abroad the praises/excellencies, of the one who called you", as well as to "offer up spiritual sacrifices" that are "acceptable"....
